Dog or Cat?

Today we came home to find her curled up, asleep in our soft-sided laundry basket/bag. She was out like a light. It took quite a bit of noise and nudging to get her to wake up (photo here).

She's been back in the laundry basket a few more times since. I'm trying hard to hold off on doing that particular load of laundry so I don't disturb her sleeping spot.

Guess if I can't have her husband, I can have her hairstyle. Funny thing - 20 years ago I had the same haircut. It wasn't called a 'Pob' back then.

Anyhow, here's a crappy self portrait featuring the new do - with bangs (or fringe to my UK pals). It's nice to be able to see without having 4 inches of hair hanging down my face.

Why I ♥ etsy

Or rather, my fellow etsians.

I'm proud to be part of the handcrafted movement and have made friends both online and in real life since joining etsy way back when. (Heck, I'm not sure when it was, but it seems like I've always been a part of it.) I love the feeling of cameraderie amongst us and love reading other etsians' blogs when I have the free time. I have been introduced to so many other talented artists/crafters through these blogs.

One of my fellow etsyNJ street team members, Kecia of Lemoncholy's recently blogged about her Christmas present from her husband; a custom painting by artist Lindsay Brackeen, who happens to sell on - yea, you know it! - etsy. Of course, I loved Kecia's gift and I had to check out Lindsay's etsy shop.

Oh. My. God.

I LOVE this woman's work. It's folky, it's whimsical, it's so, so... well, so me.

I ended up purchasing two prints for myself this morning. If I had seen the original painting for this one, I might have snapped it up right then and there. But I'm satisfied with the prints for now. I'm really anxious to get them and to figure out where in the house I am going to hang them. (Family room? But which wall?)

Oh - the other print? It's this one.

Kecia, thanks for introducing me to Lindsay and her art. One day I will get an original painting from her.

I've got a thing for seagulls, even though they're not much more than rats with wings. For years I lived landlocked with no large body of water around. While traveling, whenever I would see gulls, I knew that water wasn't far away.

I might not have the ocean in my front or back yard today, but when I am out shopping and see them scavenging in the parking lot, they put a smile on my face because I know the ocean is not that far way.

This treasury will be up until approximately 3:05 PM on December 23rd. You can find it and lot more hand-picked etsy treasuries here.

While it might be too late for Christmas gifts, be sure to keep etsy in mind for that next special occassion. One new mama will testify that I've been bombarding her house with pressies for the newborn. There is something for everyone and every occasion on etsy.

A Royal Treat

Most of my friends know I have an obsession with royalty - in particular, English/British royalty from Henry VIII and his wives to the current monarch and Prince William. Oh - and don't forget my obsession with the late Princess Diana.

When I saw this pillow/cushion on etsy, I knew I had to have it, but I was initially scared off due to the price. However, as I got a small Christmas bonus on Friday, I decided I was going to treat myself and order it.

Besides the QE II stamp pillows, you can find a lot of other fun designs at Karen Hilton Designs. I like the greyhound as well as the flower power pillows. If you're an Anglophile, you owe it to yourself to check it out.

I'm almost tempted to get another for a certain friend - but if I did, I'm sure her husband would ban me from their house. I'm pushing it with the constant barrage of Diana books -- which reminds me, I have a few here that are gathering dust. It's been a while since I've sent 'care package'...

Now I'll sit patiently and wait for her majesty's arrival. As the pillow is for me, I'm not in any rush. But I am anxious to receive it and put it out on display in my living room. On the chair next to the book case containing my collection of Diana biographies, of course.

Death Redux

Mark, Alan and Etta - May 2006

Funeral arrangements have not been determined yet - most likely Monday or Tuesday. In any case, it appears I'll be flying out to Florida on Monday morning sometime. I just have to find a flight and coordinate with Mark.

For all of you who have been with me during the ups and downs of this past year - thank you. Who would have thought we'd lose three parents (his dad, his stepmother, and my stepdad) in less than 12 months? I'm hoping that this is the last sorrowful chapter in our lives for a long time.

Prayers Please.

Mark's dad was moved from his house to the hospice facility tonight.

Mark is flying out tomorrow morning as he's taken a definite turn for the worst. At this point, they don't think he'll make it though the night. If anything, please pray that Alan has the strength to hold on until Mark can make it to Florida to say goodbye.

I will remain here in NJ until we know what is happening and when the funeral will be.

Whoever said earlier that 2007 was a crap year - I wholeheartedly agree. However, as this had to happen, I do hope it's the last 'bad' thing to happen and 2008 can be a better year for us.

Off to toss a load of laundry in the dryer... *sigh* The alarm is set for 4 AM - that's gonna come soon.

'tis the Season

I thought I'd share a few photos of my holiday decor. I don't go all out like some friends/family members, but give me time and I'm sure I'll get there.
Here's the tree in the living room and yes, that's pink carpet. Rose, actually. It was in the house when we bought it. (Or to my stitching friends - DMC 224.)

I tried to get Henry to pose in front of the tree, but he wanted nothing to do with that. Apparently the food dish was a lot more exciting.
This is the table in our entry way - photos of friends and family and a couple of snow persons. (I purchased them at a craft fair in Toms River last year.)
This snowman was purchased several years ago at a craft fair in Ohio - probably the Lakota show, if I remember correctly. The snow globe is a gift from my mom and is the Cincinnati skyline. (Mmm... Skyline.)
Hey! How'd she get here? Mark hates this throw - he says it looks like it comes from a bordello. Suki seems to be rather fond of it. I am too - it's soft and warm and red.

My tree is a mix of contemporary and 'vintage' ornaments. The vintage ornaments have been handed down from my grandmother and my mom - here's a few of my favorites:
This elf (and a few others) have decorated every Christmas tree I remember at either my grandparents' house or my mom's. Two of them now hang around my house for the holidays.
A shiny blue bird (not bluebird) from my grandma's tree.
This one was my mom's - I don't remember who gave it to her, but I think it's from Germany.
Here's a ladybug and one of the several old glass ornaments I have from my grandmother. I still have the original boxes for these ornaments with the price -- 10 cents each or 90 cents for the box.

On the contemporary ornament front, here's a few new ones which I'm rather fond of:
On the left is the paw print ornaments mom got for me at an after Christmas sale last year, on the right are the clear glass ornaments with cardinals in the trees.

And the new additions for 2007:
The glass mermaid I fell in love with during one of our excursions in Asbury Park.
Then here's Tillie - an AP icon which I had to add to my tree. See that vintage ornament to the left? Told you I have lots of them!

Here's the top of my bookcase in the living room.
The Santa was another purchase form a craft show in Cincinnati. I like Santas almost as much as I like snowmen.

Speaking of snowmen...
This guy is sitting in the corner of my staircase.

That's a peek into a corner (or two) of my house at Christmastime. One of these days I'll get out front and take photos of our lights.

Merry Christmas to all!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

If you look closely at the picture, you'll see a menorah to the left of the tree. We're a mixed family here - so we decorate for both holidays. This year I didn't get around to making latkes like I wanted to. I suppose I could always do it on Christmas Day since there's nothing else to do!

I've posted a few more shot (some closeups from the tree) on my Flickr account tonight, but I want to get a few more to show how the house is decorated. I don't go all out - yet. I'm slowly accumulating Christmas-winter decorations.

I have come to the realization that I like snowmen. There's quite a few of them around the house -- and there's at least one snowman ornament on the tree. Snowmen are nice - they can 'hang out' in my home all winter long -- and the best part is these snowmen don't melt.

Suki and Santa

I don't know what they're looking at so earnestly (obviously not the camera), but at least Santa doesn't look drunk this year.

They'll see Santa again this weekend for individual holiday photos. Maybe this time they'll look at the camera -- or maybe Mom will remember to stand behind the photographer.
